Taking Turmeric for Arthritis

We love to chat to people when we are out and about sampling our products.  One thing we have noticed is that the firmest believers in the powers of turmeric seem to be Arthritis sufferers.

I have lost count of the number of times I have heard someone say ”I take turmeric for my arthritis, it is amazing, it really works!”

So let’s talk about why turmeric is so effective for arthritis.

Arthritis has become a very common joint disorder today. The word arthritis means joint inflammation. There are many different kinds of arthritis. The three most significant are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout, they account for more than 95 per cent of cases in Australia.

Why is turmeric beneficial for Arthritis?

Arthritis in any form is characterised by inflammation that leads to pain and swelling. Enter Turmeric – a potent natural anti-inflammatory agent!

It has long been used in Chinese an Indian traditional medicine to treat inflammation and pain.

What actually happens?

Curcumin is a key chemical in turmeric. It reduces pain, inflammation and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout.

Research shows that curcumin blocks certain enzymes and cytokines that lead to inflammation, including cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the target of celecoxib (Celebrex).

How to take it?

Research has shown that curcumin is safe in high doses so it can be freely added to your diet. This is great news because curcumin also has poor bioavailability, which means it’s poorly absorbed. The addition of piperine (black pepper) helps to significantly increase the bioavailability.  So now you can experiment with many delicious ways to incorporate it into your diet.

We do recommend you use an organic turmeric to ensure it is unprocessed and does not contain any fillers. Try it as a spice in your cooking, as a tea or golden latte with milk, as an elixir in your juice or smoothie. Or even just as a supplement.

So finally what does all this mean for those with arthritis? It means regular consumption of turmeric helps in reducing the process of degeneration in the arthritic bones, joints and tissues. No wonder arthritis sufferers are such big advocates!  Turmeric Elixir anyone?
